What Is BMI?
BMI is a simple calculation that uses your height and weight to estimate whether you're at a healthy weight. The formula is:
BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)²
Or in imperial units:
BMI = (weight in lbs × 703) / height in inches²
BMI Categories

Why BMI Matters
Healthcare providers use BMI as a quick screening tool because:

The Limitations of BMI
BMI isn't perfect. Here's what it doesn't account for:
Muscle Mass
Athletes and people who strength train may have a "high" BMI despite having low body fat. Muscle weighs more than fat, so a muscular person can be classified as overweight when they're actually very fit.
Body Composition
Two people with the same BMI can have very different body compositions. One might have high muscle and low fat, while another has low muscle and high fat.
Age and Gender
BMI doesn't adjust for age (we naturally lose muscle as we age) or gender (women typically have more body fat than men).
Where You Carry Weight
BMI doesn't distinguish between carrying weight around your midsection (which is associated with more health risks) versus elsewhere.
